The education, training and experience requirements established by ECLAM constitution and bylaws may be obtained by following a Formal Training Programme or an Alternative Training Programme.

Formal Training programme
- Total duration: 4 years including a standard residency programme
- Standard residency programme
- At least 2.5 years under the direct supervision of an ECLAM diplomate
- Must meet the criteria and guidelines established by ECLAM
- Approved by ECLAM training committee prior the start of the programme
- Must include a didactic programme of 200 hours minimum
- Must include a research component

Alternative Training Programme
- Total duration: 6 years including an alternative residency programme
- Alternative residency programme
- At least 2.5 years under the direct supervision of an ECLAM diplomate. Supervisor and residents must meet at least 4 times, including at least 2 face to face meetings
- Must meet the criteria and guidelines established by ECLAM
- Approved by ECLAM credentials committee prior to starting the residency programme
- Could include a didactic programme according to the needs of the trainee
- Could include a research component according to the needs of the trainee
